In this country, there are generally two worlds of health care.  One is the world of conventional Western medicine and the other can be called as a general category alternative medicine.  I don't necessarily like the word alternative and would much rather call it non-Western medicine.

Western medicine is unmatched in many areas of specialization such as trauma and surgery.  However, it is unfortunately inextricably linked to the pharmaceutical industry, which in its drive for profits cannot see the forest through the trees.  Every symptom has a drug that is designed eliminate it yet the root cause of the symptom is often ignored.

The body is perceived as discreet parts and is treated as such.  In this world, if you have a backache, you must need a drug to mask the pain.  If it still hurts, you must need surgery on your back.  If it still hurts, you need more medication or an anti-depressant and then you are sent to another specialist.

Non-Western or "alternative" medicine tends to focus more on a whole body approach.  If you have a problem, you treat the system and your body will heal the problem.  There is also more of a focus on finding the actual root cause of the problem and then fix that cause. 

Sometimes the root cause does not seem related to your injury.  For example, if one is chronically dehydrated and stressed-out, this can cause a shrinking of discs and a tightness of back muscles.  This in turn will cause back pain.

In Western medicine an anti-inflammatory or muscle relaxant is employed.  However, in alternative medicine a hydration diet and meditation are employed to correct the root problem. 

Please beware, not all non-conventional medicine is legitimate alternative medicine.  There are a lot of quacks out there trying to sell you miracle cures and the fact is there is no such thing.

In this book I have included both conventional and alternative methods for treating running injuries.  I believe the best course is usually a combination of both but with the goal of correcting the root problem.
